In March 1999, the EEOC district office in Charlotte, North Carolina brought this action against Leggett & Platt, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. The complaint in not available. On the same day the complaint was filed, the parties filed the consent decree. The court provisionally approved the consent decree so the parties could finalize a class distribution list. Upon finalization, the court entered the final consent decree in December 1999.
The consent decree ordered the defendants to pay a total of $200,000. $15,000 is to go to the charging party with the rest to be split up equally among the aggrieved class members. Defendants are to also provide preferential hiring to the aggrieived class members at least until twelve spots have been filled with such people, they are to hold trainings detailing the company's policy against discrimination and retaliation for managers and hold group meetings for all other employees on the same topic as well as the complaint process. Additionally, defendants must post a copy of the anti-discrimination and anti-retaliation policy.
