The EEOC's Seattle office filed this suit on September 24, 1999 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. The EEOC alleged Iquique US, LLC and Arica Fishing Co violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
The case was settled, and a consent decree was approved in December 2000. The defendants agreed to pay a total of $122,000 to seven complainants while also expunging the complainants' records. Also, the defendants agreed to translate provisions of the employee handbook into Spanish and provide the improved handbook to employees. The defendants also named a Consent Decree Administrator to oversee its compliance with the decree and agreed to provide extensive training to its employees.
