In September 2001, the Dallas District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against WFC Limited Partnership, d/b/a World Finance Corporation, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas alleging discrimination on the basis of sex, race, and interracial association in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, it was alleged that the defendant discriminated against the charging parties, a Caucasian female employee and an African American male employee, by subjecting them to inferior terms and conditions of employment and terminating them because of allegations that they had engaged in a consensual romantic relationship with each other. There was very little action in the case until July 2002 when the parties settled through a consent decree.
The two-year decree, containing non-discrimination and non-retaliation clauses, required the defendant to: distribute and post a Title VII notice, distribute its anti-discrimination policy to all its employees, and provide annual Title VII training for all its employees. In addition, the defendant agreed to provide the charging parties with neutral employment references, expunge their personnel files of all references to the complaints of discrimination, and pay them a total $119,500.
