In December 1998, the Los Angeles District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against Aames Financial Corporation in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The EEOC alleged that the defendant paid female executives lower salaries than men, in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Pay Act.
In June 2000, the defendant moved for summary judgment, and in September 2000 the motion was granted in part and denied in part. Thereafter, the parties entered into a settlement agreement in December 2000. The defendant agreed to pay one woman $100,000, a second $10,000, and an unknown amount to three others.
