Case Summary

The EEOC's St. Louis district office sued Shelbyville Mixing Center, Inc., International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local Union 89, and General Drivers, Warehousemen & Helpers, Local Union No. 89, on September 22, 2000 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. The EEOC alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on sex (female) by failing to hire qualified female employees over their male counterparts. The EEOC filed a motion for partial summary judgment in April 2001, which was granted in part. The defendant then filed a motion for summary judgment in January 2002, which was denied. Finally, the EEOC filed a motion for summary judgment on January 16, 2003, which was granted on February 5, 2003. Shelbyville was ordered to pay $750,000 in damages to the class of applicants effected by the defendant's discriminatory practices.
