In July 2001 the EEOC brought this action under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan against Hart Pontiac GMC. The EEOC alleged that the defendant had illegally discharged an employee in retaliation for filing a charge with the EEOC against defendant. The defendant filed a motion for summary judgment in April 2002 which was never ruled on due to a successful settlement conference in May 2002 that resulted in a consent decree. The decree ordered the defendant to pay $32,500 to the complainant. In addition, the defendant agreed to post a notice of equal employment opportunity laws at its place of business and to institute an equal employment opportunity training program for its managerial and non-managerial employees.
