The EEOC's Oklahoma Area Office sued TPI Petroleum, Inc., a mid-west petroleum refiner, on September 16, 1998 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma. The EEOC's complaint is unavailable, however the contents of its complaint is summarized in the consent decree, filed on February 1, 2000. The EEOC alleged that TPI violated Title VII when it discriminated based on sex (female) by creating a hostile work environment for the intervenor, who intervened in November 1998, which lead to her constructive discharge. The settlement agreement stipulated that TPI would pay the intervenor $100,000 in damages, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide Title VII compliance training for its employees, expunge the intervenor's employment record and provide a neutral reference for the intervenor.
