Abstract Imagine the house you grew up in, the local pool you swam in, shopping in a grocery store full of fresh fruits and vegetables, the great school you attended with your friends, and the doctor nearby who took care of you when you were sick. That’s how all of us would like to remember our childhoods and think of our communities. But for many people, the
experience of their neighborhood is nothing like that. Where you live determines your access to good schools, parks and recreation, quality health care, fresh food, clean air, affordable credit, and even how long you are likely to live.
