The EEOC's Atlanta district office sued Federal Express Corporation on March 17, 2000 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. The EEOC's complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on religion (Islam) by failing to make a reasonable accommodation for the complainant's religious necessity of maintaining a beard. The parties entered into a consent decree on May 24, 2001, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainant $70,000 in damages, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide Title VII training to its managers as specified by the consent decree, draft a non-discrimination policy, provide for an EEO compliance official, and report complaints of religious discrimination to the EEOC semiannually.
