Case Summary

On March 30, 2006, the Los Angeles District Office of the EEOC filed this lawsuit against Catholic Healthcare West (d/b/a Northridge Hospital Medical Center) in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. On March 30, 2006, the Los Angeles District Office of the EEOC filed this lawsuit against Catholic Healthcare West (d/b/a Northridge Hospital Medical Center) in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The complaint alleged sex discrimination in violation of the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978. The defendant was alleged to have a policy of restricting the duties of pregnant employees to lessen their exposure to radiation. Both parties moved for summary judgment or, in the alternative, partial summary judgment. In January 2008, the court granted summary judgment to the EEOC on the issue of liability, sending the question of punitive damages to the jury. The parties immediately began settlement negotiations.

A consent decree was filed for this case on August 28, 2008. The consent decree required the defendant to pay $155,000 to be divided between two complainants; hire an EEOC Consultant to monitor compliance with Title VII and the decree; provide training in the form of live sessions to its employees each year; post notices of EEO rights; and distribute its policies on discrimination. Its effective period was 33 months, and there is nothing more on the docket - so presumably the matter ended in 2011. 530 F. Supp. 2d 1096.
