In September 2001, the Chicago District Office of the EEOC filed this lawsuit against Golf Galaxy, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois alleging discrimination on the basis of sex, female, and retaliation in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the complaint alleged the defendant subjected the complainant to a sexually hostile work environment, and retaliated against the complainant following her opposition to these practices. Following discovery and a failed motion by the defendant for summary judgment in October 2002, the parties settled the lawsuit in December 2002 through a consent decree.

The two year decree, containing anti-discrimination and retaliation clauses, required the defendant to: report complaints and make other compliance reports, keep records, allow the EEOC access for monitoring, develop anti-discrimination policies, post and distribute notice of employee rights, provide EEO training, implement a complaint/dispute resolution process, and pay $80,000 to be distributed to the complainant.
