Case Summary

In July 2001, the Birmingham District Office of the EEOC brought this lawsuit against Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama alleging discrimination on the basis of sex, female and retaliation in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the complaint alleged the defendant subjected the plaintiff, a female employee, to a sexually hostile work environment, retaliated against her following her opposition to the practice, leading to her constructive termination. The complainant intervened in January 2002. Following some settlement conferences, the parties settled the lawsuit in July 2002 through a settlement agreement. We do not have a copy of the agreement; therefore, the exact terms are unknown.
