In May 1999, the Atlanta District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against Servicemaster Aviation Services, L.P., Delta Airlines, Inc. and a related business in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. We do not have a copy of the complaint; therefore, the exact allegations involved are unknown. According to an EEOC press release, the complaint alleged that the defendants discriminated against the six charging parties, employees who practiced Islam, by failing to accommodate their religious beliefs when they tried to make the employees cut their beards which they kept because of their religion. The charging parties intervened in the suit in September 1999. After some scheduling orders, the parties seemed to reach a tentative settlement in late January 2000 and voluntarily dismissed the case. However, the parties reached a final settlement in July 2000 through a consent decree. We do not have a copy of the decree, but it appears from an EEOC press release that it required the defendant to pay $144,000.
