The Chicago District Office of the EEOC brought this action in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, against Urban Retail Properties Company. The complaint, filed in September 2002, alleged sex discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; specifically that Defendant had subjected the charging parties to a sexually hostile work environment.
The parties entered a consent decree in April 2003. The decree, valid for two years, required Defendant to pay the five charging parties a total of $250,000 (the individual amounts were not disclosed in the decree). Defendant was enjoined from discriminating or retaliating in violation of Title VII and required to post a notice of non-discrimination, keep records of any internal complaints of sex discrimination, and report regularly to the EEOC about its compliance with the decree.
