In April 1999, the St. Louis and Kansas City EEOC offices brought this ADA suit against Woodbridge Corporation in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri. The complaint alleged that the defendant refused to hire the claimants because they had a disability, had a record of disability, or were regarded as having a disability (carpal tunnel syndrome). One claimant intervened in the suit in June 1999. The court granted the defendant's motions for summary judgment because it held that Woodbridge did not regard applicants as substantially limited in ability to work. See Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Woodbridge Corp., 124 F. Supp. 2d. 1132 (W.D. Mo. 2000). The E.E.O.C. appealed the case in November 2000. The 8th Circuit affirmed the decision of the District Court in November 2001. See Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Woodbridge Corp., 263 F.3d 812 (8th Cir. 2001).
