On October 3, 2001, the New York office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit under Title VII against American Airlines, Inc. and Transport Workers Union Local 501 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The EEOC alleged that the defendants had violated the rights of the complainants by discriminating against them on the basis of their race and national origin. We don't have a copy of the complaint in this case, so we have no further information on the allegations.
Defendant Local 501 filed a cross-claim against American Airlines, but they later voluntarily dismissed their claim on October 9, 2002. On March 23, 2004, the parties filed a consent decree, which the court adopted. Under the terms of the decree, defendant American Airlines agreed to pay $27,500 in damages to five of the complainants, and defendant Transport Workers Union Local 501 agreed to pay $10,000 in damages to three of the complainants. The defendants were prohibited from discriminating against any of their employees on the basis of race or national origin or retaliating against any of the complainants involved in this action.
