The EEOC's Los Angeles district office sued The Oil Shoppe, d/b/a Jiffy Lube, on August 13, 2003 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The EEOC's complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on sex (female) by creating a hostile work environment and disciplining or terminating the employment of one numerous female employees. The parties entered into a consent decree on August 3, 2004, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainants $299,000 in damages, expunge the complainants' work records, provide a neutral employment reference for the complainants, provide for an official who would give the neutral employment reference, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide EEO training to its employees, provide investigatory training to its human resources personnel, draft and distribute a non-discrimination policy, maintain records of discrimination complaints and other compliance measures, and report complaints of sex discrimination and compliance to the EEOC semiannually.
