In May 1997 the Houston office of the EEOC brought this suit against Randall's Food & Drugs, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. The complaint is unavailable; therefore the exact allegations are unknown. It appears from the consent decree that the defendant was charged with violating Title VII by discriminating on the basis of race, national origin and sex. Specifically, the defendant is alleged to have refused to hire black, hispanic, or female applicants. The suit was settled in June 1997 by the entry of a consent decree.
The consent decree required the defendant to: pay 2.5 million to be divided among claimants, provide training to its employees, post notice of the settlement, post notice of all job openings, and provide offers of entry level employment to qualified claimants.
