Case Summary

In 1968, the District Court in the Northern District of Georgia issued a state-wide injunction requiring integration of all city and county jails and correctional facilities in Wilson v. Kelley, 294 F. Supp. 1005 (N.D. Ga. 1968). In 1970, two plaintiffs brought a civil rights class action in the District Court for the Southern District of Georgia, complaining of segregation in the Chatham County Jail in violation of the Kelley injunction. The district court (Chief Judge Alexander Lawrence) held that defendants were not in contempt of the state-wide order and that no racially discriminatory practices existed at the Chatham County Jail. Stroman v. Griffin, 331 F. Supp. 226 (S.D. Ga. 1971). The docket for this case is not available on PACER, and therefore our information ends with the last reported decision in 1971.
