An inmate at the Stateville Correction Center in Joliet, Illinois filed a pro se lawsuit in 1981 under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The plaintiff sought injunctive relief from disciplinary proceedings that allegedly violated his due process rights and from the overall conditions of his imprisonment. Specifically, the plaintiff complained of being transferred to Menard Correction Center without due process and of having his personal belongings confiscated during the transfer. The District Court (Judge Milton Shadur) granted the injunction on July 13, 1981. Shango v. Jurich, 521 F.Supp. 1196 (N.D. Ill. 1981).

The defendants appealed and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (Judge Jesse E. Eschbach) reversed and remanded. Shango v. Jurich, 681 F.2d 1091 (7th Cir. 1982).

After remand, the District Court held that the only issue on which the plaintiff might be entitled to relief was the allegation of due process violations in disciplinary treatment. The District Court found the defendants liable but ruled that further investigation was necessary before appropriate relief could be determined. Shango v. Jurich, 608 F.Supp. 931 (N.D. Ill. 1985).

In 1988, the District Court heard four consolidated and two previously unconsolidated cases against prison officials, including this case. The District Court (Judge Ann Williams) awarded $1 in nominal damages on the plaintiff's due process claim, holding that the same disciplinary action would have resulted had the plaintiff's due process rights not been violated. Shango v. Jurich, 1988 WL 76996 (N.D.Ill. July 18, 1988).

The plaintiff appealed and the Court of Appeals (Judge Harlington Wood, Jr.) affirmed the District Court. Shango v. Jurich, 965 F.2d 289 (7th Cir. 1992).

This case's docket is unavailable on PACER, and our information ends with this latest opinion, June 2, 1992.
