The EEOC Miami office filed this suit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in September 2000. The EEOC alleged discrimination based on race and retaliation, both in violation of Title VII, by Val Ward Cadillac in regard to one of its employees. The complainant, a black male, intervened in the suit and added a Florida state law anti-discrimination claim.
After a failed motion by the defendant to dismiss the suit, the case was settled and a consent decree was entered in March 2002. The defendant agreed to pay $80,000, to conduct training for its managers and supervisors, post and distribute a new anti-discrimination policy, and report semi-annually to the EEOC regarding any incidents and general compliance.
