The EEOC's Baltimore district office sued Silgo Creek Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Inc., on September 16, 2003 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. The EEOC's complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on national origin (Puerto Rican) by transferring an employee based on her accent and discharging her in retaliation for her complaint to the EEOC. The parties entered into a consent decree on June 2, 2004, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainant $17,500 in damages, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide Title VII training to its employees, and certify compliance with the consent decree.
