The EEOC's Milwaukee district office sued First Student, Inc. on June 6, 2002 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. The EEOC's complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on sex (female) and race by firing an employee in retaliation for complaining about his supervisor's discriminatory practices. The defendant filed a motion for summary judgment on May 19, 2003, which was never resolved. The parties entered into a consent decree on August 11, 2003, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainant $80,000 in damages, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, post its EEO policy, post contact information for its Human Resources department and people to send complaints to, provide Title VII training to its Iowa City employees, revise its complaint procedures pursuant to the consent decree, report complaints of discrimination to the EEOC as they occur, and allow the EEOC to verify its investigations into discrimination complaints.
