The EEOC's Seattle district office sued ABM Industries Incorporated, ABM Janitorial Services, and American Building Maintenance Co - West, on September 28, 2000 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. The EEOC alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on sex (female) and retaliated against the employee when she complained. The parties entered into a consent decree on August 29, 2001, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainant $50,000 in damages, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide Title VII training to its employees, distribute its non-discrimination policy, and provide for an EEO compliance official.
