Case Summary

In September 1999, the EEOC district office in Memphis, Tennessee brought this suit against the Tenet Healthcare Corporation and its subsidiary AMISUB, Inc., doing business as St. Francis Hospital, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. A black female made claims of retaliation and discrimination on the basis of her race in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. After virtually no discovery, the parties settled the case and a consent decree was entered.

The consent decree, which was entered in February of 2000, required the defendant to pay the aggrieved employee $10,000 in back pay and $17,000 in compensatory damages, post an EEO notice for one year, and require its employees to receive EEO training.
