The EEOC's Tampa district office sued Sanctuary Golf Clubs, Inc., a national golf course operator, on June 15, 2000 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. The EEOC's complaint alleged that Sanctuary violated Title VII when it discriminated against one of its employees based on race (African American) by creating a hostile work environment and failing to take corrective action when notified, resulting in the aggrieved employee's constructive discharge. The parties entered into a consent decree on October 10, 2001 which stipulated that Sanctuary would not discriminate in the future, that it would adopt a policy against racial harassment, provide Title VII compliance training for managers and supervisors, implementing a policy of discipline for discrimination, post notice of compliance with Title VII, notify the EEOC bi-annually of compliance with the settlement decree, and pay $50,000 in damages to the aggrieved employee.
