In September 2000, the EEOC's Baltimore District Office brought this suit against Residential Care, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. We do not have a copy of the complaint. However, according to the consent decree, the complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by firing the charging party, a female employee, because she was pregnant. The parties settled in April 2001 through a consent decree.
Under the two-year decree, which contained non-discrimination and non-retaliation clauses, the defendant agreed to: post an EEOC-provided Title VII notice, add an EEOC-provided anti-discrimination policy to its employee handbook, provide managerial Title VII training, provide a neutral reference to the charging party, and pay $20,500 to the charging party.
