Case Summary

The EEOC's Richmond district office sued Greyhound Lines, Inc., a nationwide bus company, on June 24, 2002 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The EEOC claimed that Greyhound violated Title VII after discriminating against an employee based on his religion (Fourth Tabernacle, Church of God and Saints of Christ) by refusing to accommodate his religious practices and retaliating against him by firing him when he applied for accommodation to his regional office. The complainant intervened in the suit in August, 2002. The parties settled and the court entered a consent decree on May 28, 2003. The consent decree stipulated that the intervenor would receive $50,000 in damages, that Greyhound would not practice discriminatory behavior in the future and would provide Title VII compliance training for its management and supervisory personnel in its Richmond, Virginia office.
