The EEOC's Oklahoma City district office sued Crest Discount Food, Inc. on January 16, 2001 in the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Oklahoma. The EEOC's claim was based on the defendant's violation of Title VII by firing one of its employees, who intervened in February 2001, because of her marriage to an African American man. The parties settled after court-ordered ADR and the court entered a consent decree on October 23, 2001. The consent decree stipulated that Crest would be enjoined from future discrimination, would be required to post a notification of compliance with Title VII's precepts, would provide Title VII compliance training for all of its employees, allow EEOC investigators on its premises to review the company's employment applications and discrimination reports, and report incidents of discrimination quarterly to the EEOC. The decision required Crest to provide the intervenor with a neutral reference and pay her damages totaling $75,000.
