On January 28, 2017, plaintiffs represented by the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project filed an Emergency Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus, and a motion for a temporary restraining order, in response to an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on January 27, 2017 banning admission to the United States of nationals of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The petition was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. The same day, Judge Thomas Zilly granted stay of removal (deportation) and enjoined the defendants from deporting the plaintiffs prior to further court orders.

On January 29, 2017, the plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed the case, in light of all the litigation addressing the same topic in the same and other courts; the court closed this case the next day.
