On September 27, 1994, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the State of New Jersey Department of Corrections under 42 U.S.C. § 2000e, et seq. ("Title VII") in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The Department of Justice asked the court for injunctive and monetary relief, alleging that the defendant had violated Title VII, by discriminating against female employees on the basis of gender.
On May 10, 1996, the District Court (Judge Alfred M. Wolin) entered an order which approved the Consent Decree and awarded Attorney's Fees. There were a number of orders after the case closed in December 12, 1996 requesting an amended Consent Decree to recalculate monetary rewards.
