On August 29, 1996, the United States Department of Justice filed an employment discrimination lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana against the State of Louisiana, the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, and the Louisiana State Police Commission. On the same day, the parties filed a joint motion for an expedited approval and entry of the proposed consent decree and a joint stipulation of uncontested facts.

On September 3, 1996, the District Court (Judge Frank J. Polozola) provisionally entered the proposed consent decree and scheduled a fairness hearing. State Police Cadets, State Troopers, and African Americans were permitted to file complaints regarding the proposed consent decree with the court.

On December 20, 1996, the court directed the Louisiana State Police to use the protective services selection battery for the selection of candidates for appointment to the position of state police cadet.

On July 16, 1997, the court approved the parties' final settlement. A non-party to the litigation appealed the final determinations. The appeal was dismissed.

After distribution of the settlement funds, the case was closed on March 9, 1998.

The only document available for this case is the docket.
