Case Summary

On August 4, 1998, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the New Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners and the Baltimore City Public School System under 42 U.S.C. § 2000e, et seq. ("Title VII") in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. The U.S. sought injunctive relief, alleging that the defendant had violated Title VII, by discriminating against a qualified individual on the basis of race.

The plaintiff alleged that said qualified candidate for the position of middle school assistant principal in the Baltimore City Public Schools was declined largely due to his being white. They requested injunctive relief for future hiring practices and that their client be "made whole" for the discriminatory treatment he received.

On August 10, 1998 the District Court (Judge Andre M. Davis) entered a consent decree order agreed upon by both parties.
