Received a recess appointment from Dwight D. Eisenhower on November 17, 1953, to a seat vacated by Otto Kerner, Sr.; nominated to the same position by Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 11, 1954. Confirmed by the Senate on February 9, 1954, and received commission on February 9, 1954. Service terminated on September 15, 1968, due to death.
