Judge, U.S. District Court, Southern District of California
Nominated by Grover Cleveland on December 16, 1886, to a new seat authorized by 24 Stat. 308. Confirmed by the Senate on January 13, 1887, and received commission on January 13, 1887. Service terminated on March 5, 1895, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Nominated by Grover Cleveland on February 19, 1895, to a new seat authorized by 28 Stat. 665. Confirmed by the Senate on February 22, 1895, and received commission on February 22, 1895. Assumed senior status on May 31, 1925. Service terminated on December 10, 1928, due to death.
