Federal Judicial Service:
Judge, U.S. Circuit Court for the Fifth Circuit
Received a recess appointment from Thomas Jefferson on May 9, 1801, to a new seat authorized by 2 Stat. 89; nominated to the same position by Thomas Jefferson on January 6, 1802. Confirmed by the Senate on January 26, 1802, and received commission on January 26, 1802. Service terminated on April 7, 1802, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Judge, U.S. District Courts, Albemarle, Cape Fear & Pamptico Districts of North Carolina
Nominated by Thomas Jefferson on April 6, 1802, to a seat vacated by John Sitgreaves. Confirmed by the Senate on April 7, 1802, and received commission on April 7, 1802. Service terminated on December 20, 1857, due to death.
