Federal Judicial Service:
Associate Justice, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia [Supreme Court of the District of Columbia]
Received a recess appointment from Woodrow Wilson on November 15, 1916, to a seat vacated by Thomas H. Anderson; nominated to the same position by Woodrow Wilson on December 15, 1916. Confirmed by the Senate on January 2, 1917, and received commission on January 2, 1917. Service terminated on February 13, 1931, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit
Nominated by Herbert Hoover on January 5, 1931, to a new seat authorized by 46 Stat. 785. Confirmed by the Senate on January 28, 1931, and received commission on February 6, 1931. Service terminated on July 3, 1935, due to death.
