Nominated by Richard M. Nixon on July 28, 1971, to a seat vacated by Samuel M. Rosenstein. Confirmed by the Senate on August 6, 1971, and received commission on August 10, 1971. Served as chief judge, 1971-1977. Service terminated on November 1, 1980, due to reassignment.

Reassigned on November 1, 1980, to a new seat authorized by 94 Stat. 1727. Assumed senior status on April 30, 1984. Service terminated on July 30, 1992, due to death.
