Federal Judicial Service:
Judge, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia
Nominated by Harry S Truman on May 15, 1947, to a seat vacated by Robert N. Pollard. Confirmed by the Senate on June 3, 1947, and received commission on June 5, 1947. Served as chief judge, 1959-1961. Service terminated on August 23, 1961, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit
Nominated by John F. Kennedy on August 2, 1961, to a new seat authorized by 75 Stat. 80. Confirmed by the Senate on August 15, 1961, and received commission on August 15, 1961. Assumed senior status on May 3, 1972. Service terminated on March 13, 1984, due to death.
