He was appointed to the court in 1988 and was appointed Chief Judge on November 10, 2009. His current term as an appellate judge expires on January 1, 2019.

Judge Murphy graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree and went on to earn his J.D. from Wayne State University. Before he was appointed to the Court of Appeals, Judge Murphy was a member of the East Grand Rapids City Commission, a law clerk for the Michigan Court of Appeals, and an attorney in private practice. Judge Murphy is a lecturer for the Michigan Judicial Institute, various bar associations, and continuing legal education programs, and has been an adjunct professor at Michigan State University College of Law.
