The case was brought by the New Orleans office of the EEOC in September 1999 in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The complaint alleged that the defendant, Lakeside Imports (dba Lakeside Toyota) violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act by discriminating on the basis of race and retaliating against employees who complained of the discrimination.
Some of the aggrieved employees filed a private suit in the same district, which was consolidated with this one (see case # 2:99-cv-03733-MVL). In August 2000, the EEOC negotiated a separate settlement with the defendant, and the EEOC's suit was resolved with the entry of a consent decree. The defendant agreed to pay $200,000 to charity, to implement EEO training for its staff, and to provide biannual reports to the EEOC of any allegations of race discrimination or retaliation.
