The EEOC's Baltimore district office sued Innovative Medical Research, Inc. on April 16, 2001 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. The EEOC's complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on national origin by failing to hire individuals with accents for interviewing positions. The parties entered into a consent decree on May 24, 2002, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainants $200,000 in damages, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide Title VII training to its managers, draft and distribute a non-discrimination policy, maintain application records and records of various accents, and report complaints of discrimination to the EEOC.
