Case Summary

In September 2000, the Memphis District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against Northwest Airlines, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee alleging discrimination in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Specifically, the defendant allegedly refused to hire the charging party because of his disability, diabetes. The charging party intervened in the suit in late January 2001. After some scheduling orders and numerous discovery disputes, the defendant filed a motion for summary judgment in late December 2001 which was denied in late September 2002. After some more scheduling orders and discovery, the suit was tried by a jury in October 2002 with the jury returning a verdict in favor of the plaintiffs. The Court entered a judgment in favor of the plaintiffs for $40,217.15. In addition, the Court awarded costs of $4,181.54 in December 2002.
