In February 1998, the Detroit office of the EEOC brought this suit against Consumer Energy Company f/k/a Consumer Power Company in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. After both parties filed discovery motions, the case settled by entry of a consent decree in June 2000. The court ordered the defendant to pay into an interest gathering fund the amount of $220,000. In addition to the monetary amount, Consumer Energy also had to offer plaintiff a job as well as hire 11 other individuals similarly situated. Consumer Energy had to post a notice of non-discrimination and send their hiring personnel through Title VII training.
