The EEOC's Chicago district office sued American Airlines, Inc. on August 28, 2002 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The EEOC's complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on religion (Islam) by failing to hire an otherwise qualified individual because of her religious practice of wearing a Hijab. The parties entered into an order of resolution on the same day, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainant $45,000 in damages and $15,000 in fees, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, report complaints related to discrimination in hiring based on wearing a Hijab, and attempt to identify individuals to the EEOC who were previously denied employment with the defendant because they wore Hijabs.
