The Indianapolis District Office and Louisville Area Office of the EEOC brought this suit against the City of Indianapolis in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana in September 2002. The complaint alleged that the city paid female dispatchers less than their male counterparts in violation of the Equal Pay Act. A private plaintiff brought her own suit (Ridener v. City of Indianapolis, 1:02-cv-01632-DFH-TAB (S.D. Ind. Oct. 23, 2002)), which was consolidated with this case in January 2003. The case was settled by a consent decree in September 2003. The three year consent decree prohibited the defendant from discriminating or retaliating in violation of the Equal Pay Act. The four charging parties were awarded $15,000 and had their salaries increased to be equal to their male counterparts. The defendant was also required to conduct Equal Pay Act training for its managers and submit annual reports to the EEOC.
