Case Summary

In March 2000, the Albuquerque and Phoenix District Offices of the EEOC brought this lawsuit against New Mexico Newspapers Inc., doing businesses as The Daily Times, and its successors Garden State Newspapers, Inc. and NorthWest New Mexico Publishing Company in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico alleging discrimination on the basis of religion in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the EEOC alleged that defendant's religious practices caused it to discriminate and retaliate against complainants, create a hostile work environment, making hiring, promotional, disciplinary, and discharge decisions based upon religion, and generally discriminating against applicants and employees on the basis of religion. Following some discovery, the parties settled the case in February 2001 through a settlement agreement. According to the settlement agreement, the defendant agreed to pay $175,000 to be divided among 4 individuals.
