Case Summary

In June 1998, the Miami District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against Pacific International Equities, Inc., a construction company, and related businesses in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida alleging discrimination on the basis of sex in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the charging party, a female employee, was sexually harassed by her supervisors and was fired in retaliation for her complaints of the discrimination.

In January 2000, the defendants filed a motion for summary judgment, and the EEOC filed a partial motion for summary judgment on the issue of conciliation. These motions were simultaneously granted in early April 2000. In that same month, the case was tried by a jury and a verdict was rendered for the EEOC. The court entered a final judgment on the jury verdict in May 2000. The judgment required the defendants to: implement an anti-discrimination policy, post the policy for two years, and pay $10,001.
