Case Summary

In September 2003, the Charlotte District Office of the EEOC filed this lawsuit against Greensboro Fitness, L.L.C., doing business as Gold's Gym, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina alleging discrimination on the basis of sex in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the complaint alleged that the defendant subjected the two charging parties, female employees, to a sexually hostile work environment. The complaining parties intervened in the lawsuit in October 2003. When defendant failed to appear in court, the plaintiffs moved for default judgment, which was granted June 2004. The judgment required the defendant to pay each complaining party $50,000 in compensatory and punitive damages and $3,500 attorney's fees.
