Case Summary

In August 1999, the EEOC's Chicago District Office brought this suit against Mid-Continent Security Agency, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. We do not have a copy of the complaint; thus, the exact allegations involved are unknown. After an unsuccessful settlement conference in October 1999 and a failed motion for summary judgment by the defendant in December 2000, the case went to trial in April 2001, where a jury found for the EEOC. The judgment required the defendant to pay: $961.50 for back pay, $187.50 for compensatory damages, and $184,000 for punitive damages. In July 2001, the defendant's motion to alter the judgment was granted, and the court lowered the amount of punitive damages to $50,000 which the plaintiff accepted. In August 2001, the defendant filed an appeal which was dismissed in October 2001.
